"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Several celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a close gang. Their visuals repeatedly feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to make music."

"So all gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The band have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness required a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

However the sister act will consistently be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
